Oracle Health has made its AI-powered patient portal generally available to all of its U.S. electronic health record (EHR) customers. The technology is designed to give patients easier access to their medical information while helping them better understand diagnoses, test results, treatments, medications and chronic conditions.
The AI can generate plain-language summaries of a patient’s health record, answer questions about laboratory results and vital-sign trends, and provide contextual information about conditions such as diabetes. It can also support patient engagement by sending reminders about upcoming appointments, laboratory tests, follow-up visits and recommended screenings. Based on previous appointments and the patient’s care team, the system can suggest appropriate clinicians and available appointment times, potentially improving treatment adherence and reducing missed follow-ups.
A key advantage is the integration directly into the existing EHR. Oracle states that personal medical data remains within its system and is not stored in third-party AI models. The portal is designed to support—not replace—healthcare professionals. Safety mechanisms prevent the AI from providing diagnoses, medical advice or treatment recommendations. Instead, patients are directed to consult their healthcare providers when medical decisions are required.
The system also emphasizes transparency: AI-generated information is visually marked and includes citations showing the sources used to generate the response. This allows patients to understand where information comes from and potentially increases trust in AI-generated health information.
For healthcare organizations, the technology could reduce administrative workload by answering routine patient questions, facilitating appointment scheduling and decreasing call volumes. This could allow care teams to spend more time on direct patient care.
The broader development reflects a shift toward patient-facing AI integrated directly into EHR systems.
